Local TipHike up, drive down. Or hike both ways — it is only 1.8 miles. Go at sunset and you will thank yourself.

The best free view in Bend, and you earn it on the way up. Everyone I bring here is blown away.

Deschutes River Trail Kelly's Pick

A gentle loop around Sparks Lake with jaw-dropping reflections of South Sister, Broken Top, and Mt. Bachelor on a calm morning. One of the most photographed spots in all of Oregon — and for good reason.

Local TipGo early morning for calm water and perfect reflections. A glass-still lake reflecting the Three Sisters is something you never forget.

This is why people move to Bend. A two-mile walk and you are looking at something out of a National Geographic photo.

Tumalo Falls Kelly's Pick
Moderate
~7 mi RT1,200 ftDog-Friendly

A 97-foot waterfall meets you steps from the trailhead. Then the trail climbs through stunning high Cascade terrain past upper falls and into genuine wilderness. Best payoff-per-mile hike near Bend.

Local TipThe lower falls alone are worth the drive even if you don't hike further. But if you keep going to the upper falls, the whole trail opens up beautifully.

Tumalo Falls is Bend in a single hike. The waterfall, the forest, the mountains — it has everything.

Tumalo Mountain
Moderate
3.8 mi RT1,450 ftDog-Friendly

A short but steep climb with panoramic views of Broken Top, the Three Sisters, and Mt. Bachelor from the summit. Often overlooked because it sits next to Mt. Bachelor — which means fewer crowds and better solitude.

Local TipSummer permits required and sell out fast — book at recreation.gov. Start at dawn. Bring layers. Conditions change fast above 9,000 feet. This is a serious mountain hike.

The hardest thing I have done near Bend and the most rewarding. The summit crater is unlike anything else in Oregon.

Black Butte
Hard
4 mi RT1,600 ftDog-Friendly
